Packing Tips for your Me to We Trip!

After being on so many trips with Me to We, I get lots of questions on what to pack, so here you go!

Below the video, there's a slightly more comprehensive list of things to think about.  Of course it doesn't include absolutely everything as certain things may vary from person to person and trip to trip.  Additionally, some of the stuff is optional as well - it's simply a list of suggestions from experience.  Please feel free to post your questions and I'll be sure to answer!

Important

  • Passport and one other piece of ID
  • vaccine records (yellow fever card)
  • Any medications you require (in original containers)
  • Money belt or fanny pack (with emergency contact info and important documents)
  • Checked luggage must be under 50lbs

Carry on

  • Any necessary medication, original containers (Remember: Malarone)
  • Passport, yellow fever card, ticket, money
  • Clothes to layer in case it's too cold or too warm on the plane
  • small blanket and/or neck pillow is nice to have
  • Deodorant wipes
  • Toothbrush and small toothpaste
  • Food
  • Journal (you might receive a Me to We journal before leaving)
  • Pen (will need to fill out customs forms)
  • Camera
  • Stuff to keep you busy (e.g. books, music, cards, etc.)

Gear

  • Work boots or good running shoes
  • Work gloves
  • Water bottle (MUST remember to pack a reusable water bottle)
  • Hat (must wear one)
  • Sunglasses
  • Head lamp (not necessary, but can be handy) and/or flashlight
  • Extra batteries

Clothing
Pack light. Expect to be either sweaty or dirty most of the time.  I suggest having a pair of pants and a few tops for the build site, and a couple other casual outfits.

(To work in)

  • We have to wear long pants (jeans, cargo pants, etc.)
  • T-shirts
  • Socks

(Casual, around camp etc.)

  • Comfortable, non-flashy stuff. Nothing above the knees, low cut or sleeveless
  • light rain jacket
  • Sandals for in the shower
  • pajamas

Toiletries

  • Towel (microfiber dries the easiest)
  • WIPES (really handy to clean off layers of dirt after working on the build site)
  • Personal care items (e.g. Deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, ponytails, etc.)
  • Laundry soap (or use your shampoo etc.)
  • Hand sanitizer (important)
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray

Miscellaneous

  • Snacks for on the plane and anything you might want to munch on between meals
  • Wall adapters & converter to charge camera, iPod, etc.
  • Bags to put dirty clothes in when packing
  • Might want Gatorade powder, juice crystals, electrolyte powder etc.

What NOT to Bring

  • Clothing with culturally inappropriate brand names or sayings, yoga wear, leggings, tank tops
  • Jewelry
  • Hair straightener, blow dryer, electric shaver
  • Cell phone (might want it for the flights, but can't use them in country)

Yes, I took a selfie in the mirror with my duffle bag!
